What are You Willing to Do to Get What You Want?
Aug 08, 2024Do you have dreams and aspirations?
I hope the answer is YES!
The real question is: what are you willing to do to turn those dreams into reality?
It's easy to desire success, but achieving it requires deliberate action.
Seven Steps to Get the Work Done:
- Define Your Goals: Start by clearly defining what you want. Whether it's a promotion, starting a business, or mastering a skill, understanding your goal is crucial.
- Identify the Requirements: Once you know what you want, figure out what it takes to get there. If it's a promotion, find out the skills, experience, and achievements needed to make it happen. Sometimes you may need to do some work you don’t love to reach your goal/desire.
- Do the Work: This is where the rubber meets the road. Success doesn't come from wishful thinking alone; it comes from consistent effort and dedication. If you want that promotion, invest in yourself. Take courses, seek mentorship, and deliver exceptional results.
- Stay Persistent: Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are careers or businesses. Stay committed to your goals, even when the going gets tough. Persistence is often the key to overcoming obstacles and achieving long-term success.
- Embrace Learning and Growth: Along the journey, be open to learning and adapting. Your path to success may not be linear, but each challenge and setback is an opportunity to grow stronger and more resilient.
- Seek Support: Don't hesitate to seek guidance from mentors, colleagues, or friends who have walked a similar path. Their insights and encouragement can be invaluable.
- Celebrate Milestones: Finally, celebrate your achievements along the way. Recognize your progress and use it as motivation to keep pushing forward.
Do The Work!
A past client, Jane, aspired to be recognized by management and promoted to a training role. She had innovative ideas and a system she wanted to implement. We collaborated to set her goals, create a strategic plan, and schedule time to make it happen.
The next step was to put in the work.
During our next 5 to 6 coaching calls, we focused on implementing the plan. Jane was frustrated that progress seemed slow. When we reviewed the list of tasks she had agreed to, it became clear that she had not completed them. I reminded her, "If you don't do the work and demonstrate to your leadership team why they should promote you, you won't get it. You need to do the work."
Jane finally began working on her plan and doing the necessary tasks. She implemented her strategies and trained her team. Her efforts were soon noticed by the leadership team. Within about three months of "doing the work," the leadership team called her in for a meeting. A month later, she was offered a trainer management position, and she was thrilled.
In essence, getting what you want requires a combination of clarity, effort, resilience, and support. It's about taking ownership of your ambitions and being willing to do what it takes to make them a reality.
